THE ODYSSEY METHODOLOGY™
A Better Way to See, Think, Decide—and Act.
The Odyssey Methodology™ is a practical business framework developed from more than four decades inside real businesses. It helps owners and leaders see their businesses more clearly, think more critically, identify what truly matters, make better decisions, and turn those decisions into action.
A Disciplined Way to Move From Understanding to Results
The Odyssey Methodology™ follows a practical progression. Each step builds on the one before it—moving from a clearer understanding of the business to better decisions, stronger execution, greater value, and more owner options.
THE THINKING BEHIND THE PROCESS
The Methodology Is Both a Mindset and a Process.
The Odyssey Methodology™ begins with a different way of looking at a business. See differently. Think differently. Identify what matters. Make better decisions. Those principles shape how we approach problems, opportunities, and decisions before action is taken.
The circular model turns that thinking into a repeatable process. We observe what is actually happening, understand what matters, decide what should be done, execute targeted action, and learn from the results. What we learn improves the next cycle of observation and decision-making.
That is why the Methodology is a continuous journey rather than a one-time exercise. Each cycle should produce greater understanding, better questions, better decisions, and stronger results. Over time, those improvements build a stronger business, create greater value, and provide more owner options.
Better results begin with better understanding—not simply more activity.
THE ODYSSEY PROCEESS
Five Steps. One Continuous Journey.
The five steps of the Odyssey Methodology™ create a disciplined cycle for understanding a business, making decisions, taking action, and learning from the results. The process is sequential, but it is not linear. What we learn through execution becomes the starting point for seeing the business more clearly the next time through the cycle.
01 — OBSERVE
See Reality Differently
Get beyond reports, assumptions, and symptoms. Look at what is actually happening in the business—on the floor, with customers, in the numbers, and through the people doing the work.
02 — UNDERSTAND
Identify What Matters
Turn observation into understanding. Separate symptoms from causes, recognize relationships, and determine which issues or opportunities will have the greatest impact.
03 — DECIDE
Make Better Decisions
Use clearer information and better understanding to establish priorities, evaluate alternatives, and decide where action will produce meaningful results.
04 — EXECUTE
Take Targeted Action
Translate decisions into action. Establish ownership, expectations, measures, and accountability—and stay close enough to the work to know whether the plan is actually working.
05 — LEARN
Investigate Before Reacting
Measure what happened, understand why, and resist reacting to results without investigation. What we learn becomes new knowledge for the next cycle.
Observe → Understand → Decide → Execute → Learn → Observe Again
FROM METHODOLOGY TO ACTION
What Does This Look Like in a Real Business?
Businesses rarely present their problems in neat categories. Declining margins may look like a pricing problem but originate in productivity, purchasing, product mix, or poor information. A cash shortage may appear to require more sales when the real constraint is inventory, receivables, debt structure, or inadequate gross profit. Growth can create as many problems as decline when the organization, systems, and working capital are not prepared to support it.
The Odyssey Methodology™ provides a disciplined way to move beyond the first explanation. We observe the business as it actually operates, investigate the relationships behind the numbers, identify the constraints that matter most, and establish priorities before committing resources to solutions.
The objective is not to fix everything. It is to identify what matters, take targeted action, measure the results, and learn what the business tells us next.
When profitability is deteriorating — determine whether the underlying issue is pricing, mix, material cost, labor productivity, overhead, capacity utilization, or some combination.
When sales are growing but cash is disappearing — examine margins, working capital, inventory, receivables, purchasing, capital requirements, and the economics of the growth itself.
When the owner is the constraint — examine decision-making, delegation, management capability, systems, accountability, customer relationships, and what prevents the business from operating independently.
When the business should be performing better — resist starting with a predetermined solution. Establish what is actually happening first, then determine what needs to change.
THE METHODOLOGY IN PRACTICE
From a Way of Thinking to a Way of Working.
The Odyssey Methodology™ is the business framework at the heart of Building a Stronger Business, a book by Rob Jones developed from more than four decades of experience running, fixing, growing, and transforming businesses.
The book provides the foundation for understanding and applying the Methodology. It goes beyond the five-step Observe → Understand → Decide → Execute → Learn cycle to explore the principles, concepts, and practical tools owners and leaders can use to understand their businesses more clearly, identify what matters most, make better decisions, and turn those decisions into measurable action.
Throughout Building a Stronger Business, the Methodology is translated into practical approaches that can be used inside a real business. These include:
Primary Constraint Discovery Process (PCDP)
A disciplined approach to separating symptoms from underlying constraints and determining what deserves attention first.
Leadership by Walking & Talking
A practical leadership discipline built around observation, questions, listening, and understanding the business where the work actually happens.
90-Day Executive Action Plan
A structured way to convert priorities into near-term action, accountability, measurable objectives, and execution.
The Woodpecker Concept
A reminder that persistent problems are rarely solved by a single strike. Meaningful improvement often requires disciplined, repeated attention to the issues that matter.
Quarterly Organizational Assessment
A recurring opportunity to step away from daily activity, reassess the organization, identify changes, and determine whether priorities still reflect what the business needs.
The Planning Pyramid
A structured approach for connecting longer-term direction with the priorities, actions, and measures required to move the business forward.
